I use to take shame in logging DNFs. I thought a DNF said I was giving up. Said I wasn’t any good. Well, that ain’t true.
I now actually rather enjoy logging a DNF. The cache I found today I had 3 DNFs on it before finding it. After the first two DNFs the cache owner went to check it out and found the container wasn’t there. I still had one more DNF after that. Which means this was a good hide. A cache that isn’t missing and has many DNFs often means it is a well hidden cache, which I enjoy.
I have also found that my DNF logs are probably some of my better logs. When you find a cache quickly you don’t spend much time in the spot. But when you DNF you most likely spent a good deal of time getting to know the area. It is these hunts that often have more interesting things to report in the logs. Such as watching a barge cut ice on the Mississippi, or hearing two bald eagles fly overhead before actually seeing them. All things I saw on my DNFs for this last cache attempt. Today, when I found it, I didn’t see anything as interesting as all that.
I can’t wait for my next DNF.
