The city of Amsterdam has taken several measures to slow down tourism. Since 2017 it is no longer allowed to open shops for tourists like bike rentals, ticket shops, souvenir shops and so on. But also ice cream shops are restricted because they attract tourists because they like ice cream. You may be surprised but actually it is very much needed to have diversity in town for tourists and residents. And to avoid that the centre turns into one big open air museum. Residents in the Amsterdam centre are happy with the measures. I suppose tourists also like the city also to be more authentic.
Meanwhile I have placed 2 new geocaches in Amsterdam and I got approval from the local authorities. I had to promise that the geocaches were family friendly, they were nothing commercial, that nothing should be damaged or changed, and that there would not be any group event with it. Then there was no objection thus I had permission. The 2 new geocaches were part of a national Geopoly-project because the dutch monopoly game has 2 streets in Amsterdam in it.
But obviously when I discussed my permission I did not mention that these 2 new multi-caches would attract new tourists 😉
