Early Geocaching History

When taking a look at the history of Geocaching we see that it is still in it's infancy in the whole scheme of things. In just over six years the game of Geocaching has evolved from that first ‘stash' placed by Dave Ulmer on May 3, 2000, only one day after Selective Availability was turned off, into a worldwide game with over 319,000 geocaches hidden in 222 countries today.

Geocaching as we know today began as the name ‘GPS Stash Hunt'. There are many websites about the history of Geocaching. One in particular that I found is A Short History of Geocaching which has a nice time line of the early history of Geocaching along with links to archives documenting the early days of the game. According to this time line the name ‘Geocaching' was adopted as the official name of the game on May 31, 2000, only a short 28 days after Ulmer placed that first cache.

I find it very fascinating and exciting to see how fast Geocaching has grown. I wonder how many geocaches will be hidden in another six years from now?
