Here’s a link to an article on White Nose Syndrome. It hasn’t hit my area. The Bracken Bat Cave is about 7 miles north of my house. It is the largest bat colony in the world. Depending on who you ask and when the number of bats in the cave number between 15 and 25 million. It’s a maternal colony so it’s all mother bats and their babies. The bats are Mexican Freetail Bats. Coming out of the cave they have to circle seven times to get enough altitude to fly away. And with the number of bats leaving you will see a thick dark line in the sky. By the time they reach my house they are spread out but you go out in the twilight and see a lot of bats fly by each minute. It’s pretty darn cool! An economics professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio opened up a brewing company – Freetail Brewing, named for the bats. They make some pretty good stuff.
